Building Permits for HVAC Installation and Maintenance

Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) installation and renewal often requires the legal coverage of an appropriate building permit. There are three basic reasons for this:
• Such systems tend to be energy intensive
• They may have an environmental impact and present an environmental risk: an air-conditioning unit that leaked coolant fluid, for example, could pose a significant, if localized, pollution threat
• Badly-installed or maintained HVAC systems can present health and safety risks.
The health and safety considerations associated with HVAC installation and maintenance are the main reasons for appropriate permits being required. There are a number of threats involved, including the spread of infectious agents (for example, the Legionnella bacterium that causes Legionnaires Disease is particularly prone to spread via water/air aerosols that circulate around poorly-maintained or designed ventilation systems) and the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning in accommodation – vacation condominiums, for example – that are not correctly ventilated.
In addition, heating and air-conditioning systems are increasingly required in some jurisdictions to comply with emissions and efficiency standards to meet environmental carbon-usage targets.
A permit expediting service such as
State Permits Inc can advise you on the necessary approaches for getting permits that include HVAC provisions past planning authorities with the least possible fuss.
It is also worth remembering that in many states and jurisdictions, it is not enough simply to have an appropriate permit for HVAC installation or major maintenance: additionally, the work may have to be carried out by a certified specialist to meet the professional standards the terms of the permit requires.
